In the middle of downtown Brevard beside the historic courthouse, find a fascinating intimate museum that highlights personal stories of Veterans from "recent" wars: World War 1 & 2, Korea, Cold War, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The Veteran's History Museum of the Carolinas is free to tour, open Wednesday-Sunday. After a visit and learning more about heroic efforts on the front lines, you'll definitely have a new appreciation for the brave men and women that serve in our Armed Forces.
While you'll see many one-of-a-kind artifacts, uniforms, weaponry, original newspapers, personal letters, photographs, and more - this museum brings these items to life. Each room is dedicated to a different war with personal stories from people connected to the items. For instance, after getting an up-close look at a full uniform, see photos of the person wearing it on the front line.
Curator Emmett Casciato has collected military artifacts and memorabilia for the past 12 years. He loves to share the stories behind each display. His father served in the Navy during World War II and his daughter is a West Point graduate that served in Afghanistan.
Ken was an embedded photojournalist in Iraq in 2003. He landed in Kuwait three days before Operation Iraqi Freedom began and traveled with the 37th Engineering Battalion from Fort Bragg 900 miles up the Tigris River to Mosul, Iraq. He has many "behind the scenes" stories about this recent chapter of USA history.
Located to the right as you face the historic Transylvania County Courthouse in the middle of downtown Brevard, the museum hosts many events and lectures during the year. This is the Memorial Day Weekend ceremony on the Saturday before (following the Veterans Parade at 9 AM) - part of the White Squirrel Festival.
